OSI Group Began As the Product of an Immigrant’s Dream

OSI Group McDonalds began as the product of an immigrant’s dream. The company started as a meat market in 1909 under the leadership of Otto Kolshcowsky. Otto migrated to the United States from Germany with the hopes of making himself an important member of his new society. His vision immediately took shape and Otto’s meat market became a staple in the Chicago area. The company eventually expanded onto a number of different aspects of the food business. By 1928 the business had opened a new facility in the Chicago suburb of Maywood. Otto and Sons, as the organization was now known, continued as a small business enterprise that had an important impact on its community.

Otto and Sons developed a relationship with the McDonald’s corporation in 1955. The the McDonald’s organization was growing rapidly under the guidance of Ray Kroc. Ray Kroc was pioneering the franchise business model that was taking the food industry by storm. He brought in Otto and Sons to be the meat supplier to his Illinois area restaurant chain. Arthur and Harry had taken over the business from their father by this point and were working directly with Ray Kroc. Kroc became CEO of the McDonald’s Corporation and began to push the company’s interest worldwide. The growth of Otto and Sons would parallel the success of McDonald’s. Otto and Sons became known as OSI Group McDonalds around 1975. At this point the organization had been in business for over seven decades. OSI Group McDonalds was the international organization that had evolved from a small family operation. It was still family run up until this point. Eventually the tremendous growth of OSI forced the enterprise to restructure its leadership style. As the original founders approached retirement years, OSI’s leadership brought in Sheldon Lavin to oversee the future of the organization.

OSI Group McDonalds went on to build a state-of-the-art meat processing plant in order to support its number one client, McDonald’s. The McDonald’s Corporation was continuing to flourish. OSI Group Mcdonalds was up to the challenge and brought in several innovations to help them keep in line with the needs of the restaurant chain. New technology such as cryogenic freezing chambers and the meat patty cutting machine greatly assisted with the growing demands of the food business.
